Sunday Club 13th January 2019

Theme:  Wise men today still seek the Saviour (Information from Sermon4kids)

Object: A Map

Christine asked the children, “If you were going to visit someone from another town or city that you hadn’t been to before. What questions might you ask?”

Some replies included:

What is your address?

How do I get there?

What are the directions?

We are lucky today to have equipment to use in our cars such as a Sat Nav or if we haven’t; we can use a map. The map will show us exactly how to get where we want to go. As we travel, we should keep checking the map to be sure we don’t get lost and are going in the right direction. If we follow the directions properly , we will surely find the way.

Michael read the following story: After Jesus was born, some wise men, also called Magi, saw a star in the sky which they believed announced the birth of a king. They travelled to Jerusalem and began to ask, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw His star as it rose, and we have come to worship him”.

Herod heard about them and their search for a king and was deeply disturbed. He called a meeting of the priests and religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” The priests told Herod that the prophet Micah had written that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. So Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men and said to them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”.

As you know, the wise men did not have a map to guide them, but something better – a star. The wise men found Jesus after following the star and the information that Herod had given them.

Can you remember what the wise men gave him before they bowed down and worshiped him? The children knew it was Gold, Frankinsense and Myrhh.

Wise men, women and children are still searching for Jesus. Our Vicar, ordained ministers and us are here to help. We don’t have a star or map to follow. What do we have – A Bible.

We can find our way to Jesus by reading the Bible. By reading the Bible often we can make sure we are heading in the right direction.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we seek you today because we want to worship you and crown you as our King. We are thankful for ministers and Sunday club leaders who want to help us and we are thankful for the Bible which we have been given to lead us to you. Amen

Activities:

Michael and Alfie were given several bible verses to find which related to ‘following directions’ and the younger children decorated stars.

On leaving the vestry the children searched for gold stars and silver crowns that had been hidden in the porch and passageway to church. These contained the words to the following sentence. We saw the star in the East and have come to worship Him

They had to put these in the right order.
